Whichever Martial art you are into, the jab is used as the range finder. It is as if you were blind and scrambling around in the dark to get a sense of whats in front of you. This is how you get a feel for the distance.
In this way it isn’t important whether you land a power jab, it can simply be used to gauge distance by touch.
It is the same action either way, you just increase the voltage for power, driving through the target, or flick it out lightly with speed in a kind of pawing action.
