Identifying Aggressors.

People often ask “How do I recognise the attacker in the street?”. What I do is look at the way people walk, listen to their voice, what they are doing with their hands, and then I can get an idea of whether they are a threat. I don’t bother looking at their contrived actions, and their and carefully studied demeanour. No, instead I look for the almost imperceptible impressions he gives off. For example the unconscious movements he makes with his eyes, mouth and head – because this is where people betray themselves. By knowing what to look for, you can therefore avoid being fooled. The tiniest detail is often the most revealing, and most of the time people don’t study themselves adequately to work on these things.

It is unlikely that someone who has studied their demeanour, and the impression they make on others, will allow themselves to lose control. This would only put them in danger on the street. This is why young and naive people are often the aggressors: They don’t have the experience and wisdom to conceal and overcome their natural inclinations. Or to put it differently, they waste a lot of energy on unproductive behaviour.

The strongest individuals will know how to work on their aggressive tendencies and won’t waste their time on pointless exchanges with others. Yes, the most courageous heroic individuals have within them the same monstrous tendencies as violent attackers1. Aggression is very normal, but it is expressed differently depending on the person. If you are inwardly strong you do not need to show off about it, and if you need to show off you are not inwardly strong.

Knowing that people only look at appearances only, many weak and insecure people strut around arrogantly creating hostility wherever they go. This is a tell tale sign of weakness. It is only an outward appearance of self confidence, inwardly they are children who are accomplishing nothing. And of course, children can be dangerous too. Whilst these types are dangerous if, say, you bump into to them drunk on the street out with your family, then of course it is difficult to get everyone to safety and you may be forced to stand your ground. Unfortunately these situations occur relatively frequently, because opportunistic predators often strike when an individual is with vulnerable others. However, I do not wish to talk about that, because any number of martial arts publications deal with what to do practically. In fact this is all they seem to deal with. Although it is an important subject, I instead want to talk about intuitively knowing what will happen in certain situations according to the laws of human nature.

What I am mainly concerned with is identifying a dangerous attacker in somebody who is seeking to take the scalp, symbolically speaking, of someone equal to themselves. Why do people pick on those who are protecting or associating with the weak? Because they know such a persons forces can be divided, between watching over those they are protecting, and fighting off the aggressor. It is a tactic of divide and conquer. So if you want to avoid such a situation my only advice is to be very careful not to attract attention to yourself. Do not let pride get in the way.

As an exercise, whenever you are out and about get a general feel of the area. Is there a sense of tension in the air? Are the people walking around aimlessly creating a general environment of listlessness? Then avoid these places and don’t come back there with people under your protection. These environments attract seemingly pleasant people, but their is nothing to nourish their better nature. Instead, go somewhere out the way, into the countryside, or a slightly more expensive venue. The behaviourally unsophisticated have no taste for these place and don’t know how to operate in them. These are by no means insignificant details.

Many people visit areas and places which attract maggots, vermin, and wild animals, figuratively speaking. Here, they expect to find enjoyment and pleasure. However, they inevitably find trouble. In these dumping grounds which warehouse all sorts of vagrants and idiots (so that they don’t pour onto the street) – trouble is just around the corner. You have been warned. Develop a habit of avoiding these places if you want to be be able to remain at ease when you are outside. The people might seem pleasant enough, but actually in say, a nightclub, there cruelty and instinctive calculations become apparent after a few drinks.

Do not suppose you can come out unsoiled from places like the nightclub on a Friday night. People who are usually sensible and strong willed have got themselves dragged into a fight. It only takes a moment of bad judgement. People smash glasses, slap each other, bump into everything, without ever noticing what effect this has on their own inner condition and others around them. Well, I can only say that it causes great disturbance, whether people are conscious of it or not, and makes them resentful, annoyed, and grudging. People think they can’t do without these places, but it only takes a few years of practice to and you will no longer feel the same way.

As an exercise, start by going whilst not drinking and you will realise that people get drunk precisely because of the foul atmosphere and coarse attitudes of the people in there. By all means drink if you like, a glass of wine never did anyone any harm. People often notice that by doing this they come away tense due to all the meaningless blather that comes out of peoples mouths, which resembles the sound of a machine gun. Then of course they go back to heavy drinking. Instead if you avoid these places, after a few years you may well realise you’re better of without them.

All that needs to be said is that if you associate in bars and night clubs with people looking to ‘lose themselves’ then that is exactly what they will do. In other words, the level of consciousness going on in these places is very low and therefore peoples behaviour is volatile from one moment to the next. There is no doubt that people are looking for fun in these places, but instead what you get is a lot of people groping around miserably, which sours the atmosphere. If you sleep with a dog, you are likely to get fleas. In the same way, if you hang around in many of the nighclubs and bars out there, you are likely to have your state of mind changed to suit the environment and you will no longer be thinking lucidly.

A man spills the pint of another man who blames him for spilling it. The first man insists it was the other guys fault. Neither backs down and hostilities begin. There is beer on the floor, people everywhere, and one wrong move can result in splitting your head open on the hard floor. If it goes to the floor in a wrestling match, other members of the group will pile in smashing bottles and trying to kick your head in. The bouncers will not discriminate, and will often act violently towards the two parties. I have seen this many times, as men on the doors will often look to gain their stripes any way they can. An observer looking at the scene impartially would realise that the two men were collaborating in the same task: A competition to see who was the toughest.

Once you set a scene in motion the consequences are then out of your control. In the above example a 50/50 fight begins. It doesn’t matter what your training is, you are embroiled in a fight which can only work to your disadvantage. You may think you are entirely in the right but that just shows how ignorant you are. When we look at the causal mechanisms of a fight it involves two forces colliding. If you want to take control of the situation I suggest taking the role of the impartial observer and you will see that you can transform a bad situation into a good one by rising above it. Walk away.

As long as people think in terms of beating the aggressor with violence they will never be capable of transforming the situation into a good one. They will continue to give off arrogant glances and signals to other violent individuals, all the while supposing they had nothing to do with the fight when it kicks off. And then situations of this kind will torment them wherever they go. It is they themselves who have given this evil in others power over them. I hope this is quite clear, that you only need to work on yourself principally to stop the aggressor. In other words, by seeing violence as something independent of their influence, they have availed themselves of the means to pre-empt it. It is only because martial arts training has become so lifeless and without philosophy that there is no one to remind them of this fact.

The problem is that many people are ashamed of themselves for not fighting back or crushing the opposition. But it is because they fight without intelligence. If you have a philosophy of doing whats morally right and watching the signals you give off to others, you will act with confidence and assurance. You will know you did everything you could to avoid calamity. On the other hand, rubbing people the wrong way and giving off arrogant gestures tends to make you feel discouraged and lacking in inner confidence. Morality is considered so old fashioned that nobody bothers with it. But actually, the moral teachings in martial arts are designed as a practical guide to developing will power and courage. One of the main reasons martial arts is so ineffectual today in peoples lives is that it lacks this moral fibre.

Self Defence without Violence

“Disciples should not be preoccupied with their own faults or those of others. When they study someone, they should seek out the good within him. The good lies deep within, and must be found.”

Peter Deunov

How do you become strong, powerful, and dynamic without descending into chaos and violence? How do you live an intense life, without being destroyed or going too far as so many have? These are some of the most profound questions that Martial arts Masters and philosophers have grappled with for centuries. Some such Masters understood that by giving themselves over to violence and chaos, which may seem pleasurable, an individual eventually develops their worst tendencies within, and to top it all off: self deception to justify such behaviour.

Many fighters strut about with an arrogant attitude towards others, even when no one is being hostile to them. This belligenerant attitude is often developed as a protective shell. It is is aimed towards others, as a means of warding off opponents, but actually ends up developing the very antagonism in others that they work so hard to fight. It’s a case of the old general who always fighting the last war. In other words the aggression seen in others, directed towards us, is often a result of our behaviour, a reflection, rather than a separate constituent part of the process. Put differently, people are aggressive towards us because we are at the same time aggressive towards them. Aggressive behaviour, then, must be combated at the source: Ourselves.

Many instructors will tell a young student “You simply do such and such a move to overcome an attacker”. And that’s the end of it. However, many people want to learn to overcome their sense of inferiority, not simply react against an antagonist to feel tough. However, It is often this sense of inferiority that is displaced onto other individuals rather than dealt with properly. Soon the supercharged ego, fueled by winning at all costs, finds enemies everywhere. When one opponent disappears another quickly takes their place in the form of somebody looking at them the wrong way, or chatting up their girlfriend, or whatever. Then you will have a horrible inner monster to contend with. This is the real enemy, and the battle against this is the very definition of “inner martial arts”.

By feeding kill or be killed attitude many fighters end up becoming the very thing they despise, because there is a certain reciprocal relationship between the antagonist and the antagonised. They both relate to each other on the same level and need each other. This is why when a bully is stood up to, the one who was bullied by them often fills the vacuum created: By becoming the bully themselves and finding a victim. “Those that lie down with Dogs get fleas”. In other words, don’t descend to this level.

The thing the bully and the victim share in common is that they both define others and themselves as either winners or losers in some narrow sense of a particular outcome. In martial arts the aim is to turn a loser into a winner. But the one can’t exist without the other, and they often gain all their confidence from relegating others around them to a lower position. In doing so, they work at this lower level themselves and get stuck there. Sometimes I get the impression that this is their only goal. If they really are determined to see it that way, let them go ahead, but a true fighter does not fight the enemy on their home turf by sinking to their level. You might say “I was told never to back down, and to always make the first move”. Yes that’s true, but move to a higher level and from that vantage point do your worst.

Doing away with others never puts anything right, inward disorder and chaos still continue long after the opponent has been defeated. You are better off avoiding those determined to be physical aggressors as a means of developing positive forces and energy. That is why The famous swordsman Yagyu Munenori said “What is gained or lost by winning of losing is trifling…It is not to kill people, it is to kill evil”. Because by destroying others with violence you create evil, an inner chaos. However, by saving them, in other words diffusing the situation, you destroy evil. This is the higher goal of Martial arts, an ideal if you like, that you will never find lacks opportunity for its practice. In fact, this is the only real goal of martial arts so why consider all kinds of contradictory notions? I know there are some rare occasions where fighting can’t be avoided but I’m not interested in that because generally speaking it can be.

So what I am saying is you should transform your oppositions attitude towards you by your gestures, expressions, bearing, energy, and attitude. That is why so many Masters of Tai Chi in the old days spent all their time practicing harmonious movements. By using these potent weapons properly you will transform opponents, and you are perfectly within your rights to use them whenever you like. This is work worthy of the highest esteem. These are the weapons I recommend cultivating principally unless you want others to despise you. Yes, because it is in your power to influence the behaviour of others for better or worse.

The method of harmony, fighting without fighting, also works on your self against emotional strain and trauma, often brought about by endless petty struggles of the kind you’re better off without. Unfortunately, this idea lacks any kind of a tough guy imagery associated with “the fight game” and therefore people lose respect for you. Instead, in the market place, you’ve got to pull the wool over peoples eyes with emphasis on certain styles and slogans. Yes, then you are a force to be reckoned with, a somebody. A simple philosophy of sacrifice and hard work is too “simplistic”. However, sacrifice, that is gaining something greater than winning in the narrow sense, allows for peace of mind against all that life throws at you. But if you go around with this philosophy people take zero interest in what you have to say and look at you like you’re a man from Mars.

Personally, knowing I could do some serious damage with a punch, that’s enough for me, I choose not to do it. There is no need to have a death wish by becoming a martyr for some cause, a hero that is unbearable to others in the impression he gives off. That is often what the self destructive attitude is about: A secret wish for defeat, and end to the constant challenges life throws at us. Once you have gotten over this obstacle, which should overcome on the path to truth, why go over it again and again? Why not see the challenges within instead, they are far more high stakes and numerous.

Most fighters think they have to show the other guy who’s boss. To them, fighting means possibly getting maimed or crippled, or becoming mentally unwell, living this way even, and that’s just the way it is. Either that, or the other guy may suffer the same, it’s 50/50. Personally, I have no desire to be limited and victimised by this stupid attitude, I’d rather put an opponents aggression to sleep at a distance. That is the true meaning of “fighting without fighting” or the so called “esoteric energies” of the ancient spiritual arts. You must not think of their powers in the literal sense2. No, it is not a case of taking some potion made by a tribal leader, or receiving the blessing of some sage to gain supernatural powers. Nor is developing a tough “iron skin” a literal phenomenon. Has anyone ever explained this to you?

Of course nobody ever thinks that there might be some truth to these legends, symbolically speaking. You might say “That’s a load of rubbish, where are you getting this from?” On the contrary, enchanting someone under a spell or getting rid of them from a great distance of “10,000 leagues away” as detailed in the Art of War by Sun Tzu, simply means destroying their efforts before they are close enough to do harm. This is the the real art1.

You must simply ask yourself: What is the best way of ridding myself of antagonists so I can get on with the real work of living? It is that simple. You will then be able to synchronise your thoughts to all situations, because they require peaceful settlement. If a Country goes to war they cannot at the same time advance their civilization optimally. However, if they go about diplomatically defusing situations they can then get on with proper work. It is only when Countries become Barbaric that they thirst for war rather than advancement. So you have to convert the thirst for war against individuals into a thirst for war against evil. There is then coherence in everything you do, because you then have one goal, rather than dividing your forces towards war and then trying to build on top of the ashes.

Just look at how people are hypnotised or seduced into wasting their money on all sorts of rubbish, no one would have any trouble denying these modern day “dark arts”. In the same way they are goaded into battles they don’t want. This is the lower self talking, the instinctive and reactive vestige of the past2. At the moment many people are content to give into these tendencies without using will power3, as if it was the norm. Be under no illusion, if you don’t use will power to think well of others, yourself, and your own future progress, you will be as susceptible as anyone else to despair and chaos.

Everyone knows the benefits of positive thinking, so why not apply it to what most people consider negative things by seeing the best elements? The more you do this the more perceptible you will become in making something out of apparently nothing. You can’t count on your physical skills, or even on your mental toughness, because simply exchanging punches with some maniac is always a 50/50 game, as Steve Morris often points out.

Aggression

“aggression, far from being the diabolical, destructive principle that classical psychoanalysis makes it out to be, is really an essential part of the life-preserving organisation of instincts.”

Konrad Lorenz

So little is know about the real purpose of aggression that it’s no wonder people struggle with the idea. Most of the time you will hear people talking about how therapeutic it is to let out all their aggression on the pads or in the ring. For me, there is a certain satisfaction about doing work and improving through this kind of exercise. However, the sense of satisfaction you gain is not simply a void created by an absence of drive. It is a realisation that I’ve used the drive as a raw material to create something: A new skill, idea, or concept. In this way you can convert the useless feeling of undirected energy into a useful product.

This is the whole point of training: The instincts never do anything right if left to their own devices, so put them to work. There is no reason to eliminate or suppress them. By working with your instinctive aggressive drive to create ways of overcoming problems, you will put aggression to work constructively. This work demands intelligence, creativity, and direction. People who practice martial arts understand this idea of channeling energy and see for themselves that this is the essence of fighting. However, as soon as they leave the gym they often go off an treat life as something totally different, as if subject to different laws. They will get bullied by their boss, their friends… Whoever. And then they think to themselves “I need to go off and release my aggression on the heaveybag!”. This way of looking at aggression is extremally limited. What’s the point in learning something if you just contradict it in everyday life?

Often individuals direct their aggression towards other people. For example in a heated argument people often blurt out all kinds of nasty comments. They think they feel better having vented the anger in them. They feel strong and confident! But as soon as they have seen how counter productive this is they feel a certain regret. This is perfectly natural, because they have wasted a resource and directed it in a counterproductive way. Instead, try to direct it dynamically in your behaviour, for example by asserting yourself vibrantly in everything you do.

In fact why not direct aggression towards driving out the negative attitude in others? Very often if you go the right way about it, you can gain the respect and even admiration of your antagonist, which is well within your interest to learn how to do. If someone does you wrong, remind yourself how ignorant and helpless that person must be to waste their time and energy on trivial disputes, and that they deserve to be pitied. Help them understand this by putting them down subtly. This requires hard work to master and is a worthy use of your energy in itself.

Obviously, when someone is insulting you or attempting to drag your name through the dirt this is no time for gentleness. It’s time to show them how strong you are in your whole demeanour and expression, by directing your willpower towards this display. Just as you would in a ring or defending yourself in a live exercise. What you have to understand is that all martial arts behavior can be applied elsewhere. Don’t put up with things passively by submitting.

Just having the right attitude and determination can make a potential antagonist powerless before he can get close enough to do any harm. Most of the time this is all you need, because they will sense that you are superior to them, since they have nothing to do than to bring others down around them. But how many people really think about this?I’m not saying go around arrogantly asserting yourself, on the contrary this just shows to the someone in the know how vulnerable you really are.

The next time someone tries to annoy you try this simple exercise. Ask yourself whether there is anything to gain from arguing back, or whether you would be better off using the feeling of heated energy stimulated in you, or aggression, to put on a disinterested display of tolerance. By disinterested I don’t mean apathy, just act impersonally by refusing to lower yourself to the level of personal hostility. Because this isn’t the real battleground, it’s a smokescreen. In other words battle your own weakness and susceptibility to win the fight indirectly. And there is no shortage of opportunities for this, no matter how good and in control you think you are!

All aggressive behavior aimlessly directed at others is symbolic of a dissatisfaction within the antagonist. Perhaps this is the only means of direction they have. Poor them. It shouldn’t be taken personally, because it is natural for people to get riled up and act aggressively. That is, in the absence of anything better to do. An antagonist often lacks of control over their actions which they betray through hostility and negativity towards others. Why else would they be focusing their energies, their resources, on pointless battles? What needs explaining is how to overcome and move beyond these primitive reactions seen in so many so called tough guys. My advice is to just make sure through your own conduct that you don’t provoke hostility, just act to limit its adverse effects on you.

This is not the same as “letting someone get one over on you” or simply doing nothing like a cat caught in the headlights. No, instead you have produced something from the aggressive force generated in you, rather than letting it overwhelm you by ignoring its reality. It is entirely up to you how you direct the stimulus provoked by hostility. And the more highly attuned to your surroundings you are the more likely you are to pick the cues up. In other words the most alert and powerful individuals have the most frequent needs of directing their energies wisely. And people say they have it easy, and ask how do they stay so calm? If only they knew the work that goes into such apparent calmness and natural suavity.

Alternatively, you could try going off and using this energy to go for a walk or perhaps doing some exercise. But don’t let it go to waste. And never let feeling of defeat and weakness linger on without action, because then it will have a chance to eat away at you.

Often you will have to argue your corner to avoid being bullied, or to simply demonstrate that you are not going to be walked over. And if you have to do that I recommended exerting yourself in the following way:

After deciding that you have no choice but to make a stand to put an end to the unfairness of the situation, explain the impact your antagonist is having on you. Then explain what you would like to be done about it and what you think. Very often this will be enough to put them off a confrontation again. However, if you inspire bitterness in them by carrying on arrogantly and making demands on them, expect to never see the end of it. Make every effort to spare the embaressment of the other person so they don’t come back and bite you at a later date when you least expect it. Because that’s what they will have every right to do if you have inspired such feelings in them.

You must defend yourself but often not by the same primitive means many people use. Instead use intelligence to direct primitive drives. Most of the time your opponent will be so surprised by their lack of impact and control over you that they will simply have no choice but to move on. They’ll pick someone weaker and less determined if they even suspect it might be a 50/50 fight. Above all, martial arts practice isn’t just the raw expression of aggression. It must be intelligently managed by aggression and directed wisely. Obviously this doesn’t mean you will be totally devoid of emotion during an exchange. However, the thing to do is to put your aggressive drive to work intelligently and often so that you encourage the interaction between it and intelligent practice. The more you do this in everyday life, the more likely it will work with you when it counts.
